When was ancient Israel "Jewish"?

Ancient Israel was polytheist. For much of their contemporary history Judah and Israel were at war. I keep hearing that Israel should be the "Jewish" state because it always was. Yet I have heard of absolutely no archaeological finds pointing to exclusive worship of Yahweh. Quite the opposite in fact.
